Recovery from breast reconstructive surgery, for the most part, is routine. Although some people do experience swelling. Excessive swelling is an issue you should discuss with your surgeon. However, there is often a precise reason why this issue is happening. With a few adjustments to your aftercare techniques, you may resolve the problem.

Avoiding Cooling Applications

As part of your post-op instructions, you may have been instructed to apply an ice pack or compress to the incision area several times a day. Cooling applications promote healing and directly target swelling. So, if you are experiencing increased swelling, failing to perform this step could be why. Invest in several ice packs to always have a cold one on hand. As a bonus, ice can serve as a numbing agent, minimizing pain.

Not Wearing Compression Garments

You may have been fitted for a compression bra before your procedure was performed. Compression garments essentially help keep the entire chest area in place. Less movement means enhanced healing and a reduced risk for swelling. Also, wearing compression garments will help minimize discomfort. If you have not been wearing these garments, you want to start soon. If you need help with sizing, do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for assistance.

Maintaining Improper Posture

When you rest in bed or on the sofa, you must maintain proper posture. If you do not, swelling can become a major issue. For the most part, you want to avoid lying flat or sitting straight up, such as at a 90-degree angle. Posturing yourself in either of these ways will put excess pressure on the breast area due to gravity, which may be the cause of your swelling. Sitting slightly propped up with a few pillows is best.

Overexerting Yourself

By far, one of the most common reasons why you may be experiencing excess swelling is overexertion. Breast reconstructive surgery may not seem like a major operation, but it is significant. It would be best if you allowed your time ample time to heal. In addition to staying home from work, you want to avoid performing laborious housework, such as vacuuming and lifting children and heavy objects. If you are engaging in these practices, this may be why you are having issues.

Again, if you experience swelling after your reconstructive surgery, be sure to speak with your surgeon right away. However, in the meantime, review these care tips to see if you need to adjust your aftercare routine.
