Nasal spray is a common prescription for people who have problems with allergies, especially during certain times of the year. This is because nasal spray helps reduce inflammation, which relieves congestion, sneezing, and itching in the nose during allergy season. If you use a nasal spray prescription, you want to be sure that you are using it properly every time. Not only will this ensure that the nasal spray is working effectively for you, but it will also guarantee that you aren't exposing yourself to becoming ill in anyway. Here's how to use nasal spray the right way:

  • Wash Your Hands: Before you start, be sure that you wash your hands. You don't want any dirt on your hands getting on the top of the nasal spray, thus being drawn into your nose, which can cause illness. This can also create irritation in the nasal passageways, which will make the nasal solution ineffective.
  • Blow Your Nose: Another thing to do before using the nasal spray is blowing your nose. This will get rid of anything that is in your nose that could be pushed back up into it when you use the spray. This can be uncomfortable and, again, cause irritation in the nasal passageway.
  • Spray the Nasal Spray: Be sure that you close the nostril that you are not using, keep your head up so the solution is getting up into your nose instead of running back out, and breath in quickly when you spray it. Doing this is going to ensure that the solution is going to take effect in your nose and do what it's supposed to in order to help prevent allergies.
  • Wash Your Hands: After using the nasal spray, be sure that you wash your hands so that any of the solution on your hands is washed away. You also don't know how dirty your nose can be, so washing your hands is important to get rid of the germs you touched during this process.

When you use nasal spray in the correct way, you can be sure that you are getting the most out of the prescription. If you feel that the spray is not helping with your allergies, it's best to talk to your doctor about other nasal spray prescriptions that may be better suited for you. Every nasal spray will be different, but must be used in the same way in order to ensure effectiveness.
